Everything Begins With the Reading

There is an old saying among the elders: A man who walks in darkness will call every obstacle his enemy. A man who carries a light knows where to place his feet.

That light is the reading.

In Palo, before a remedy is given, before a cleansing is prescribed, before a single herb is gathered from Malongo, Mother Nature herself, there is the reading. Everything begins there.

A true Tata does not guess. He does not speak from imagination or emotion. He listens.

The reading is a sacred conversation between the living, the spirits, and the wisdom of nature.

Traditionally, the reading begins with simple yet powerful elements, each carrying a purpose handed down by our Congo ancestors.

Mpemba

The Mpemba, the white candle, is lit to illuminate both the physical and spiritual path. It reminds us that truth cannot remain hidden when light is present.

A glass of water is placed nearby for clarity. Water is the great purifier, the mirror of the spirit, and the bridge through which messages may travel without distortion.

Glass of water

The Nkobos, the shells, become the mouthpiece of the spirits. Through them, the ancestors speak—not in words, but in symbols, patterns, and wisdom that the trained Tata has spent years learning to understand.

All of this rests upon the sacred cedar board, prepared with the secrets of Malongo. Cedar carries memory. It remembers the forest, the earth, and the covenant between mankind and nature. It is not merely a board; it is a foundation upon which communication with the spiritual world is established.

Many people ask, "Why do I need a reading?"

Imagine trying to walk across a cluttered room in complete darkness. Chairs, tables, broken glass, and unseen obstacles lie everywhere. Every step is uncertain. You stumble, you fall, and you blame your luck.

Now imagine someone hands you a flashlight.

The room has not changed.

The obstacles have not disappeared.

But now you can see.

You know where to step.

You know what to avoid.

You know which path is safe.

That is what a Palo reading does.

It illuminates what has been hidden.

It reveals the opportunities approaching your life, the dangers that seek to cross your path, the blessings waiting to unfold, and the spiritual influences surrounding you. It shows what should be embraced and what must be avoided before it becomes a problem.

But Palo does not stop with information.

Knowledge without action is incomplete.

My own godfather has always reminded me:

"There is no such thing as a problem—only solutions."

That single sentence contains the heart of Palo.

Unlike many spiritual systems that simply reveal what is happening, Palo seeks to restore balance. Once the reading identifies the root of the imbalance, the spirits guide us toward the appropriate remedy.

Perhaps Malongo calls for specific herbs.

Perhaps a spiritual bath is required.

Perhaps an offering to the ancestors.

Perhaps a cleansing of the home.

Perhaps prayers, discipline, or changes in one's own behavior.

Just as a physician examines a patient before writing a prescription, a Tata first consults the spirits before prescribing spiritual medicine. Every remedy is unique because every soul walks a different road.

Open path

The plants of Malongo are not random.

Every leaf carries a vibration.

Every root has a purpose.

Every tree remembers its Creator.

When gathered with reverence and according to tradition, these sacred medicines become instruments through which both nature and spirit work together.

The reading tells us which medicine nature has already prepared for you.

That is why guessing has no place in Palo.

We do not simply throw herbs together and hope for the best.

We seek wisdom first.

Then we act.

There are certain moments in life when obtaining a reading becomes especially important.

A birthday marks the beginning of another journey around the sun.

The New Year opens new spiritual roads while closing old ones.

Marriage, the birth of a child, starting a business, changing careers, purchasing a home, traveling, or recovering from illness are all crossroads where guidance can make the difference between walking blindly and walking with purpose.

Even when life seems peaceful, a reading serves as spiritual maintenance. Just as we service our vehicles before they break down, we should also care for our spiritual lives before imbalance becomes suffering.

The ancestors are always speaking.

The question is not whether they have guidance.

The question is whether we are willing to listen.

If you have been feeling blocked, confused, overwhelmed, or simply wish to understand what lies ahead, perhaps it is time to seek the light rather than continue walking in darkness.

The reading does not create your destiny.

It reveals the roads before you.

It shows the obstacles.

It uncovers the blessings.

Most importantly, it offers the wisdom needed to move forward with confidence, guided by the spirits, strengthened by the ancestors, and supported by the sacred medicine of Malongo.

Do not wait until life forces you to seek answers.

Seek understanding before confusion becomes hardship.

Let the Mpemba illuminate your path.

Let the Nkobos speak.

Let the wisdom of Malongo reveal what has been waiting to be shown.

Your journey begins with a single step.

In Palo, that first step is always the reading.
